Red Flags of the Moving Business

Posted by on

Unfortunately in today’s day and age, we have to be suspicious of people and their businesses. When it comes to the service industry, many people are looking to websites such as Angie’s List, Yelp, and Google to gather information and reviews on prospective service providers. Within the moving industry, you (the Consumer) have to deal with companies that are referred to as “rogue movers”. A rogue mover will typically give you an estimate over the phone or internet that seems too good to be true. They will win your business because of the low price and get your household goods on their truck. However, that’s where the nightmare begins.  They will typically demand more money before they will even deliver or unload your goods, holding your precious household belongings hostage. To get your possessions back, you will be forced to pay.

The fine folks at have developed a list of red flags to look out for and recognize before selecting a moving company. Please take the time to visit their site and see and the list here:

The early bird catches the worm

This proverb especially holds true during the peak moving season. Between Memorial Day and Labor Day, days book rather quick and early. You’re going to want to start your research for a mover at least six weeks prior to your desired moving date. Researching movers takes time and shouldn’t be a last minute decision. This will give you enough time to properly research and compare each potential moving company. Start by looking at customer testimonials, reviews, and even by word of mouth from your friends and family. It’s never too early to start researching, Memorial Day is only 14 weeks away.

Choosing Your Mover

Good resourse for you to choose your moving company. The American Moving And Storage Association started a program called the Pro-Mover program. Check out the web site and list of Pro-Movers that may be able to service your move.

Winter Moving Tip

Posted by on

When moving during the winter it is always a good idea to make a clear path for your movers.  You can shovel and put down a light layer of salt.  Using too much salt will only cause more problems by it being tracked in/out of your homes.  Any outdoor items;(patio furniture, BBQ, fire pits, flower pots, umbrella stands, etc...) should also be cleared of all snow and ice.  Some items may be frozen to the not try to force these items up as they will most likely break.  Simply use some luke warm water to free them from the frozen ground and then place them in your garage if you can.  Also turn down your heat as the front door of your home will be open most of the day.  Please consider what the new home will look like as well, it is equally important that the new location has a clear path for your crew to access as well.

Moving Tip

Please be organized the day of your move.  If moving locally or long distance all cabinets with loose shelving will need to be removed(glass or wood).  If you are paying by the hour, you may want to do this before your mover arrives. Saves time and money.
